Challenges and Opportunities
City and federal government are using challenges to encourage developers to produce interesting analyses and applications with city and federal data. These apps help families explore their cities, help travelers get to their destinations faster and safer, and help residents understand the performance of their city government.

Recent Events
The city of Louisville, Kentucky held an event on International Open Data Day, February 23, 2013. The city hosted the event and challenge with $10,000 in cash prizes. Mayor Greg Fisher noted, “The task is to design or prototype an app that helps improve the quality of life in our city… No idea is too strange or too bold. We want to see interesting ideas and innovation at work.” The winning app was Your Mapper Team, which allows you to see the safety rating of your area, report crime, and find the closest police division.
